Benjolin
Eight-channel installation, built around a self-designed chaotic synth circuit · 2014–2015
Benjolin is the name Hartono gave to a chaotic noise-generating circuit he designed and built himself, and has used as a compositional source since at least 2011 — audible in Anti Music, and later as the chaotic voltage source driving the Buchla synthesizer in Spectral Chaos (2022). As a standalone eight-channel installation, the instrument was presented at Soundislands, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, on 10 August 2015.
The instrument was also performed at Institute of Sonology, The Hague, as part of Discussion Concerts 4 & 5, 30–31 March 2015 — in a trio with Ruben Brovida and So Oishi. A related presentation, credited to Patrick Gunawan Hartono, is also listed at Concert Two of the sines|squares Festival, John Thaw Studio Theatre, Martin Harris Centre for Music and Drama, University of Manchester (NOVARS), 24–26 October 2014 — one year earlier than the Singapore date. The instrument itself was not released as a standalone recording; it recurs as a compositional tool across other works in this practice.
