Anti Music

Noise composition, built around a self-built Benjolin circuit · 2011

Composed in 2011, Anti Music is one of the earliest surviving pieces built around a chaotic noise-generating circuit Hartono designed and built himself, which he named the Benjolin — the same instrument that resurfaces over a decade later as the compositional engine behind Spectral Chaos (2022).

In 2018 the piece was included as track 79 of 123 on Pekak! Indonesian Noise 1995–2015: 20 Years of Experimental Music from Indonesia (Syrphe, catalogue S022), a DVD-ROM compilation documenting two decades of Indonesian noise and experimental music, released as FLAC audio with an accompanying PDF booklet. The compilation's liner notes describe him simply: "Patrick Gunawan Hartono is a composer from Yogyakarta who studied electroacoustic music in France, the Netherlands and now in the UK. He built his own noise instrument called Benjolin."
