Angkot Is the Melting Pot

Closing performance of Helatari Salihara 2017, the biennial contemporary dance festival at Komunitas Salihara, South Jakarta, 18 June 2017. Choreographed by Yola Yulfianti, drawing on her doctoral research (ISI Surakarta, 2014–2017) observing passenger culture aboard Jakarta's angkot minivans along the Kampung Melayu–Pasar Senen route.

Two dancers, Irfan and Densiel, performed at a busy Pasar Minggu intersection — on road dividers and streetlight poles, alongside passing angkots and motorcycles — while Hartono managed the live audiovisual stream from the street into the Salihara gallery, where the indoor audience watched the processed feed in real time.

Covered in The Jakarta Post and Detik Hot, where Hartono is named as "the performance's audiovisual programmer" and quoted on the technical constraint that shaped the piece: "We can't accomplish a stable live streaming in Indonesia because here we don't have a stable 10MB per second track" — the connection dropping and rebuffering became, in effect, part of the work's texture.
