A generative audiovisual composition completed during Hartono's final year at Rotterdam Conservatory (Codarts) — the outcome of experiments with creative-coding platforms he had been running since 2011. Built in Max/MSP, the piece drives audio-reactive visuals directly from algorithmic rules across three linked movements (A–B–A), where the final movement's return is a development of the first rather than a literal repeat.
In 2017 Matrix Studies received the International Computer Music Association's Audience Award at ICMC 2017 — the 43rd International Computer Music Conference, held jointly with the 6th Electroacoustic Music Week at Shanghai Conservatory of Music, 16–20 October 2017 — and went on to further international festival and conference screenings. One of these later screenings is documented on video: an international open-call selection at AudioRocketFes, hosted by Osaka University of Arts' Music Department.
