Fixed-media composition in four movements · 2022
Composed during Melbourne's sixth COVID-19 lockdown, built entirely from recordings of the objects Hartono's confined daily movement kept bringing him back into contact with — bedroom, living room, kitchen, balcony. In his own programme note: "my movements are constrained within premises... that created a unique 'pattern', which then inspired me to interpret it into two compositional approaches: sonic structure and sound spatial."
The piece's four movements are structurally separate but sonically bound — a scratching texture morphs continuously across all of them — while each track is spatialised, rotating clockwise or counter-clockwise, to build an immersive layer independent of the sonic material itself.
Premiered at ICMC 2022 (Standing Wave), Concert 4, University of Limerick, 4 July 2022, and performed again at NYCEMF, Frank Shiner Theater, New York, 20 June 2022.
